Steven Hendrix '84
2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award for Professional Achievement
Steven Hendrix’s prolific career began with an equally accomplished Carroll experience.
He double majored in economics and Spanish while also being active on the tennis team,
campus religious services and the Carroll radio station.
He went on a NCEP trip to Mexico, was an honorary exchange scholar to England's University
of Nottingham, and was part of the Presbyterian Church's National Peacemaking Committee,
formulating national policy to end apartheid in South Africa and human rights abuses
in Central America. Hendrix graduated from Carroll Magna Cum Laude in 1984.
He continued his studies completing a law degree Cum Laude and a Master's degree with
honors in Ibero-American studies at the University of Wisconsin in 1987. Hendrix applied
his bilingual skills to international litigation, attaining law licenses and bar memberships
in Central and South America, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., the U.S.
Court of International Trade and the U.S. Court of Appeals. He has a doctor of law
degree from Universidad Mayor de San Andres in Bolivia and a doctorate in judicial
sciences from Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala.
For more than 20 years, Hendrix has led policy reform and institutional transformation
in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. He currently serves with
the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which he has been with since
1997, providing economic and humanitarian assistance to Central America and Mexico.
He also has an extensive pro-bono record in Latin America, negotiating labor, family
and civil law issues for historically disadvantaged groups.
Hendrix has published more than 100 professional journal articles and an award-winning
book. His expertise has been requested for international television, radio, internet-based
programs, and lectures at universities and non-profit organizations. He has served
on boards for non-profit organizations and made leadership contributions to various
private voluntary organizations and church congregations. Hendrix has received a multitude
of honors and awards for his professional accomplishments.
He and wife Julia Roane '86 have three children, Daniel, Susana and John. When not
abroad, Hendrix lives in Arlington, Va.
