The Education Department offers multiple pathways for licensed educators to deepen their expertise in reading acquisition and reading difficulties. Programs include certificate and licensure options, along with customized pathways toward earning a Master’s degree.

Program Options

Our graduate offerings in literacy allow educators to choose what programs will best serve their professional learning needs. Pursue your Reading Teacher License, the Reading Specialist License, and/or the Dyslexia Interventionist Certificate. These programs may be completed individually or combined as part of the Master of Education in Literacy (M.Ed.) degree.

Reading Teacher License

This program offers a supportive and interactive environment for current classroom teachers to broaden their understanding and skills related to research-based reading assessment, evaluation and instruction.

Reading Specialist License

This program extends the reading teacher license for educators wishing to pursue additional expertise in literacy assessment, instruction and leadership.

Dyslexia Interventionist Certificate

This one-year, fully online program is aligned to the International Dyslexia Association’s (IDA) Knowledge and Practice Standards and prepares candidates for certification as an IDA Dyslexia Interventionist.

Learning Community Model

Participants meet together one weekend a month to provide students with time and space to examine issues thoughtfully and collaboratively–creating a community of learning that’s self-sustaining. Classes are held virtually on Friday evenings from 5-9PM and on the Carroll Univeristy campus Saturday mornings from 8AM - 12PM. Our cohort model allows participants to move through courses with the same group of peers–building strong professional relationships and support along the way. Each cohort is facilitated by Education faculty and instructors with deep expertise and experience in the field.

We offer competitive tuition with discounts available for educators from partner districts. Our certificate and licensure programs require just 9-15 credits each. With flexible 7-10-month programs or a two-year M.Ed. pathway, our offerings are designed with working professionals in mind.

Accredited and ACT 20 Approved

Carroll’s Reading Teacher and Dyslexia Interventionist programs are accredited by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and International Dyslexia Association—making us an approved Act 20 provider in the state of Wisconsin. This distinction highlights the rigor and quality of our graduate literacy programs.
